Dutasteride and Tamsulosin are combined in this medicine.
This medicine is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement of prostate gland).
An enlarged prostate may cause problems when you pass urine. Dutasteride + Tamsulosin helps relieve symptoms of prostate enlargement such as difficulty in passing urine, slow or interrupted flow of urine, frequent urination, and dribbling after passing urine.
Take Dutasteride + Tamsulosin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take this medicine 30 minutes after a meal. Swallow it whole. Do not divide, chew or crush the capsule. Try to take it at the same time each day.
This medicine must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know
Alert your doctor immediately if you have a history of severe allergy to medicines known as sulphonamides.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- severe liver disease
- history of orthostatic hypotension (fall in blood pressure when standing up from a sitting or lying down position)
as Dutasteride + Tamsulosin may not be suitable for you.
This medicine is not indicated for use in women and children.
Some genetic traits can affect this medicine’s level in the blood. Individuals who have reduced CYP2D6 activity, also known as poor metabolisers of CYP2D6 may experience enhanced effects from Tamsulosin. Poor CYP2D6 metabolisers should not take Dutasteride + Tamsulosin together with drugs belonging to group called strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. ketoconazole) as this may cause Tamsulosin levels to increase. If you know you have this gene type, inform your doctor.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- prostate cancer
- severe kidney disease
- mild to moderate liver disease
- urinary problems e.g. difficulty passing urine or decreased urine output
- heart disease
Dutasteride + Tamsulosin may be absorbed through the skin. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant must not handle and should avoid any contact with this medicine. If accidental contact with crushed or broken capsule occurs, wash the affected area immediately with soap and water.
You must use condom or other effective birth control methods to prevent contact of this medicine with your partner.
Do not donate blood while you are being treated or for 6 months after you stopped taking this medicine.
If you are going for an eye operation, including cataract or glaucoma surgery, inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine.
This medicine may interfere with the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test which is used to screen for prostate cancer. Inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine before you take a PSA test.
Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- Routine tests (e.g. anal examination, PSA blood levels) may be done before and during your treatment.
- Your blood pressure may fall to unsafe levels without you noticing it. Monitor your blood pressure during treatment.
- Regular monitoring of urinary flow may also be needed.
Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
Dutasteride + Tamsulosin may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: breast enlargement, tenderness or pain, decreased sex drive and problems in ejaculation or in maintaining an erection.
This medicine may cause your blood pressure to fall suddenly when you get up from a sitting or lying down position and you may feel giddy. To minimise this problem, stand up slowly.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Dutasteride + Tamsulosin with medicines for fungal infection e.g. ketoconazole if you are a poor metaboliser of CYP2D6.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for HIV e.g. ritonavir, indinavir
- medicines for depression e.g. paroxetine, nefazodone
- medicines for stomach ulcer e.g. cimetidine
- blood-thinning medicines e.g. warfarin
- medicines for erectile dysfunction e.g. sildenafil, tadalafil
- anaesthesia (medicines to block pain and sensation)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Dutasteride + Tamsulosin.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
